Barnett Shale

The Barnett Shale is located in the the Bend Arch-Fort Worth Basin, which is in North Texas near the city of Fort Worth. Named after John W. Barnett, the shale was discovered during a geological mapping exercise when geologists noticed a thick black organic-rich shale in the local Barnett Stream.

The Barnett Shale is a very important source of natural gas for Texas and is said to be the largest onshore natural gas field in the United States covering 5000 square miles and 18 counties. Some counties containing the Shale are Denton, Tarrant, Johnson, and Wise counties. Counties with Drilling Permits
